Home Selling Tip: Hire a Professional Organizer

In the good old days, when homeowners wanted to sell a home, they simply called an agent and listed it. Today's sellers are juggling many roles: parent, spouse, chauffeur, coach, employee, student and more. There is very little personal time to get the house in great shape, let alone make it look spacious and well designed.

Homeowners understand that reaching their goal isn't dependent on how a system works, but on how they learn to work within a system. This is one reason why home owners are calling professional organizers to assist when selling a home.

Professional organizing consultants are efficiency engineers hired to help sellers edit inventory, pack and unpack boxes in home. Editing (sometimes called decluttering or minimizing) the amount of personal possessions in the home is crucial to making a home look its best. By rearranging objects in rooms and creating more open space, sellers are making an investment that will pay off in the sale of the home.

My typical clients are successful professionals suffering from "role overload"; their schedules are out of control. There is guilt about always running late for dance recitals and soccer games or not being able to attend daytime school functions. Family dinner times don't exist and homework is usually faxed back and forth to a parent's office before they arrive home in the evening.

For these homeowners, the thought of spending time packing boxes and organizing the contents of closets is out to the question - it creates more stress. Often when clients try to help me, they are interrupted by e-mail, mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets - not to mention spouses and children.

Selling a home is overwhelming for people multitasking at full speed. They would rather pay an experienced professional to do those jobs while they keep earning money or spend leisure time with their families. Professional organizers are the antidote for the overloaded, elderly, or chronically disorganized home seller.

There is only one chance to make a first impression on a buyer and first impressions are key in selling a home quickly for its market value. Most buyers make up their mind within minutes of walking in the front door. For this reason, it is crucial that the home appear clean, neat and clutter-free.

Professional organizers go through a home and quickly evaluate trinkets and treasures in a nonjudgmental manner. The home is seen as as buyers will see it. Selling a home is about making money; it is a business and it should be treated as a business.

Affluenza is an unofficial term, but one I use often, meaning a condition where one spends discretionary income on non-necessary items. It is probably the most common problem I see in homes I organize. Pack up as many things as possible and strive to present a calm clean, clutter-free, spacious home - even if it isn't spacious. The idea is to show the buyers that there is plenty of storage space for their stuff in this house.

Remember, that an organizing pro is only a phone call away.
