Footnote: The conversion bill, initiated by the Ultra-Orthodox parties, who are members of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s governing coalition, called for the state of Israel to officially outlaw Reform and Conservative conversions performed in Israel. While this had always been the unofficial status quo, the attempt to enshrine the arrangement in law caused widespread anger among non-Orthodox Jews, particularly in North America, where many Jews belong to the Reform and Conservative streams.

The controversy has yet to be resolved.
